Course description:
The main content of this course includes: systematically introducing Sociology as a discipline, the research objects and methods, the history, development and founders of sociology,and the fundamental theories in the filed of Sociology. The course aims to cultivate students’ capability of applying what they have learned from the course to identifying, analyzing and resolving practical problems regarding specific social issues, such as gender relations, globalization, poverty, religion, terrorism, race, migration, the media and so on.
Expected learning outcomes:
1.Equip students with a comprehensive literacy of social sciences, particularly a qualified literacy of sociological thinking, by providing them with a chance to learn about the fundamental theories and knowledge in the field of sociology.
2.Get students’ capability of critical thinking trained in professional ways, make them capable of applying what they have learned from the course to resolving practical social problems.
3. A proficient mastery of the macro and micro processes of social change, as well as a well-informed knowledge about how the elements of social relations have significant influence on the practice of social interaction.
4.Process the idea of social reality as a system, being capable of understanding human interactions within the context of social change.
5.Being well informed about the current situation and trend of social development in China and other countries.
6. Know how to conduct sociological study by using specific methods, such as questionnaire, interview, participant observation, ethnography, etc.
