On March 17-19th, 2023, under the leadership of Liu Ming,  Deputy Party Secretary of the International School, and student instructors, around 30 students from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, and Overseas conducted a three-day study tour in Chaoshan to explore the historical charm and development of Lingnan, and learn about its unique customs and culture.

The first stop was Chaoshan History and Culture Expo Center, a vast complex providing an excellent introduction to the history of Chaoshan. The Center brought the Chinese diaspora's story to life through interactive exhibits, dioramas, and photographs, representing the history and culture of the city. At the same day, the study tour group followed General Secretary Xi Jinping’s steps and visited Masu Island and Shantou Xiaogongyuan.

The group enjoyed a memorable experience visiting Nan’ao Island, walking, and exploring its beautiful beaches the next day. They then visited Qing’ao Bay, which is known as “Eastern Hawaii,” and the “Gate of Nature – Tropic of Cancer Sign Tower.” The breathtaking views and peacefulness refreshed their minds, allowing them to embrace the natural beauty of China and experience the lifestyle of the local people.

On the third morning of the trip, the group visited the Guangji Bridge in Chaozhou, known as the “oldest drawbridge in the world.” They then went to the Ming Qing Paifang Archway Street, where they admired the 23 ancient archways that contained a large amount of historical and cultural information and unforgettable historical stories. The street is lined with shops, including Chaozhou's famous traditional stores with local specialties.

The Chaozhou Hanwengong Shrine was another unique and informative destination, allowing the students to learn more about the region’s history. They marveled at the intricate details of the shrine, from the artful carvings on the buildings to the serene atmosphere of the beautiful gardens. The visit to the shrine was an enlightening and enjoyable experience that deepened the students' understanding of the Chaozhou region's cultural heritage.

The study tour to Chaoshan was an important opportunity for the youth to engage in a cultural experience, learn about Lingnan culture, and gain a deeper appreciation for its values and significance. By sharing their experiences and knowledge with their peers around the world, students can play a vital role in spreading Lingnan culture and promoting mutual understanding and respect across cultures.
