English Debate Team of International School--A Brand New Start
Maybe you have heard of TED×JNU this semester, but do you know there is another brand new organization called JNU-EDT? Yes, that's us, the English Debate Team under the International School, but we dedicate ourselves to providing high-quality training and an English debating platform for all students in Jinan University!
Different from the traditional debate, the parliamentary English debate is a much more challenging and interesting form of debating, and it has been popular among universities all over the world for a long time. The China Open, World Universities Debating Championship and many other international debating competitions all take this debating format. In Guangdong Province, over 10 universities have set up their own EDTs (even including JNU Zhuhai), and now it has been introduced into JNU’s main campus.
From the end of last semester, several students from the International School have been preparing to set up JNU-EDT. With the support of teachers from the International School, this semester we put up recruitment posters around campus, received sponsorship from New Channel Institution and interviewed new members. So far, JNU-EDT has recruited 25 students, including 9 core members and 16 new members. On April 27th, we held a welcome party for all members. After a short ice breaking segment, the team leader, Cheng Yuming, gave a speech about why we set up EDT and our goals. Deputy team leader, Ma Yue, introduced the upcoming competitions and the training plan for this semester.
In May and June, we will take part in GDS Novice Cup and GDS City League. We believe that these tournaments will help our team members to get familiar with the debating rules as soon as possible, improve their critical thinking, and broaden their horizons.
