On November 14th, 2012, a meeting for foreign students was held on the balcony of the Second Science Building by the Overseas Student Affairs Department.(OSD)

The meeting started at one o’clock in the afternoon and was attended by about 30 foreign students, all of whom were freshmen in the International school. The hour-long meeting, which was held in a carefree atmosphere, focused on international students’ experiences in Jinan University.
Before the meeting, the participants chatted happily with each other about their daily life. At 1:00 pm, the meeting began with the host’s warm welcome to the students.

During the meeting, everybody spoke about their feelings about different aspects of their life here, such as their school life, their study life, etc. Some expressed their opinion that the food in our canteen is not only delicious but also very cheap. Some complained that their dormitories don’t supply hot water and hoped the situation would change very soon. And some suggested that their dormitory living conditions are not that good.
When it came to their study, the majority of them suffered from a language problem. Though all the classes are given in English, they found it difficult to understand what some teachers said because, while the teachers might give an explanation in English, they also translated explanations into Chinese. Moreover, it was difficult to understand some teachers’ strong accents. Some also hoped that the first class could be put off until 9a.m, as they felt this was a more reasonable time.
However, in general, those who were involved in the discussion said that they had a good time in Jinan University. In the free discussion, on the host’s asking where they wanted to go on a trip together in the future, they showed a strong interest. Someone suggested camping and told of his wonderful camping experience in Shen Zhen. Some of them preferred a winter camp, while others suggested hiking. It seemed that all of them were looking forward to the short trip.
All the participants said that the most interesting thing they met here was cultural shock. They exchanged their own amusing experiences in China. Everyone found some different customs between their country and China during their communication with friendly Chinese students.
As time went by, an hour passed and the meeting came to an end with a smile on everyone’s face.
