Objectives and Reqirements:
 
Food irradiation is a promising new food safety technology that can eliminate disease-causing germs from foods. The effects of irradiation on the food and on animals and people eating irradiated food – the safety of irradiated food - have been studied extensively. These studies show clearly that when irradiation is used as approved on foods.
 
At completion of this one-hour unit course, the student will be able to:
1.    Define irradiated food, and why food has to be irradiated.
2.    Describe the technology used for irradiation of foods.
3.    Describe the equipment and engineering principles
4.    Be able to answer some public questions and concerns about irradiated food.
5.    Know what foods can be irradiated.
6.    Describe what happens when food is irradiated.
7.    FDA regulations and International symbol for Irradiated Food.
