Applied physiology is the study of how living organisms work under different conditions. Area of applied physiology includes adaptive physiology and integrative physiology among others.

Adaptive physiology includes
1) inherent adaptations such as those related to development, aging, and pathophysiological conditions and
2) adaptations to the external environment such as those occurring with exercise, microgravity, hypoxia, hypo- and hyperbaria, and hypo- and hyperthermic conditions.

Integrative physiology includes
1) horizontal integration across organ systems and
2) vertical integration from molecule to cell to organ.

The course teaching will be given in various ways including seminar, tutorial, self-study, as well as lecture to promote the ability of scientific thinking and to foster the ability of grasping advanced knowledge by self-study.

After complete the course, students should be able to:
(a) describe the integrated function of the major organ systems of the human body;
(b) explain the physiological changes and control of these systems under different conditions such as bleeding, aging, exercise, microgravity, hypoxia, hypo- and hyperbaria, and hypo- and hyperthermic conditions .
