Preliminary Contest of Freshman Cup Debate

The preliminary contest of "freshman cup", which organized by Academy and Development of the International School League Committee and Student Union, was held in Panyu campus N224, N226 and N228 on November 3, at 9 am. A total of 16 teams took part in the debate competition, and eight excellent matches were presented for us. We were lucky enough to invite the heads of the debate teams of different academy as judges, and there were many spectators to watch the competition.

In N224, there were three matches. The first debate was started by School of Public Administration and Emergency Management and International School. School of Public Administration and Emergency Management emphasized that the mainland should impose a carbon tax while International School disagreed with that idea. School of Public Administration and Emergency Management thought this policy’s implement could help us protect our environment and achieve sustainable development.International school thought it would harm the national interest and hinder economic development. They argued fiercely and School of Public Administration/School of Emergency Management won out.The second debate was started by College of Foreign Studies and College of Life Science and Technology. College of Foreign Studies believed that the advantages of the commercialization of world cultural heritage outweigh the disadvantages, which could bring economic benefits and better protect the cultural heritage, but College of Life Science and Technology was against that idea, they thought it would distort the cabinet of antiquities. Finally, College of Life Science and Technology won. The last debate was started by Shenzhen Tourism College and Law and Intellectual Property School. Shenzhen Tourism College thought it was very important to pay attention to cultural construction to protect intellectual property rights, and Law School / Intellectual Property School thought paying attention to legal construction was more important. After a debate, Law School / Intellectual Property School won.

In N226, there also existed three matches. The first debate was started by Jinan University - Univeristy of Birmingham Joint Institute at Jinan University and College of Journalism and Communication, Jinan University - University of Birmingham Joint Institute at Jinan University thought it was reasonable to the government's release of information about sexual assault to society, and College of Journalism and Communication was against it. Their argument was so heated that it was impossible to argue with each other. And the second debate was started by College of Chinese Language and Culture and College of Technology. College of Chinese Language and Culture thought that the mainland should impose a carbon tax while College of Technology disagreed with that idea. They argued vehemently with their own scriptures. The last debate was started by First Clinical Medical School and College of Information Science and Technology. First Clinical Medical School thought it was very significant to pay attention to cultural construction to protect intellectual property rights, and College of Information Science and Technology thought paying attention to legal construction was more important. Then they had a heated debate.

In N228, two matches were held. The first debate was started by College of Arts and Management School. College of Arts emphasized that the advantages of the commercialization of world cultural heritage outweigh the disadvantages, but Management School disagreed with their opinion. Eventually, Management School won the game. And the second debate was begun by School of Medicine and School of Economics. School of Medicine was in favor of the government's release of information about sexual assault to society, because it could speed up the psychological reconstruction of victims, while School of Economics opposed it, arguing that it affects the normal life of sexual assault. A heated debate began.

At the end of the competition, the judges conducted detailed analysis and excellent comments on the performance of each competition, fully affirming the active performance of the contestants in the debate process, and also proposed the shortcomings of hope for improvement. After the competition, the judges presented the best debaters and the winning teams and took photos together. Therefore, the preliminary debate of the "freshman cup" ended with a warm applause from the students.

Ideas kindled sparks, words debated passion. This debate competition not only exercised students' debating ability, but also improved students' thinking and reaction speed, enhanced students' language organizing ability and adaptability, and developed their teamwork spirit. Hope that all teams in the future will continue their previous state, make generous remarks, express themselves directly, create new achievements and release the charm of youth.
