On May 11th, 2013, the Department of Academic Affairs and Development held a Model United Nations about the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP). The delegates of this conference were from Brazil, Nigeria, United States, Russia, Zambia, China, Japan, India and Malaysia. Raewyn, an English teacher of the International School was a guest.

After a roll call, the agenda of the conference, which was between Topic A ”Climate Change Mitigation and Sustainable Energy” and Topic B “International Regulation and Public Conception of Nuclear Energy” was set. As a result of voting, Topic A was chosen. At first each country had 2 minutes to present their positions. Then they came to the “Moderated Caucus” part. China came to the stage and proposed the topic of “Carbon Emission Trading”. They used 10 minutes to address the topic and most delegates were in favor of it. The other countries presented other motions such as the solar energy program, the Kyoto Protocol and the peaceful utilization of Nuclear energy. The next part was the “Unmoderated Caucus”. Every delegate left their seats and discussed with other delegates in groups in order to find a solution to those problems.

Finally the delegates of India, China and Nigeria formed an alliance and worked out a working paper and shared it with all the delegates until the paper was passed.

In the end there was an award ceremony. Everyone was happy and they communicated well together. The skills they used will stand them in good stead in the future.
