the Chinese debate competition for freshmen

The Chinese debate competition for freshmen was held on October 28th, in the Teaching Building N224 and N225 in Panyu campus. We invited the debate leaders of different academies and members of the university debate team to be our judges. There also had huge crowds of people came to watch the competition.

the first round

The first debate was started by J-BJI and Environmental school. The debate topic was “Should China extend the retirement age today”. After the passionate and rational opening statement of the opposite, the game entered the free debate. The speakers of the J-BJI started with the point of delaying the retirement age would solve the aging problem, persisted in using human resources and making up the gap of social security funds, making a clear statement of their own views. On the other side, the speakers of Environment school started with saying by delaying the retirement age would affect youth employment which would bring more burden on enterprises.

the second round

At the same time, the school of Chemistry and Materials and the school of Pharmacy were having a intense debate in another classroom. The two academies competed on “the contradictions between doctors and patients in today’s China are mainly cause by economic problems or ideological problems”. The speakers of both sides had made clear ideas in the various links such as argument, refutation, and intellectual debate, and quoted classics and abounding Chinese classics.

the third round

The final debate competition was held by the speakers of the Art School and the International School. The two sides engaged in the issues of whether paid leave should or should not be fully implemented in China nowadays. The speakers of Art School suggested that the comprehensive implementation of vacation can promote the development of tourism, making up for the “ golden week’’ concentrated vacation system on the lack of time. On the other hand, International School demonstrated the argument let China is not suitable for the full implementation of the paid vacation system. The clear thinking and artful speech of the pros and cons left a deep impressions to the audience.

At the end of the competition, the judges conducted detailed analysis and excellent comments on each contestant’s performances, fully affirmed the lively performance of the two contestants in the debate, and also put forward the shortcomings of the hope for improvement. In the end, through the fair and impartial judgment of the judges, the Birmingham Union College of the Jinan University, the college of Pharmacy and the International School broke through the tight encirclement and won the debate qualification. The debate competition for freshmen not only trained student’s debating ability and cooperation ability, but also improved students’ thinking and reaction speed, communication skills, and enhanced students’ language organizing ability and adaptability. The judges presented the best debaters and the winning teams and took photos together. This “ freshman cup” debate qualification competition ended successfully in the warm applause of the students.
