Course Objectives and Requirements

The purpose of this course is to provide students with an understanding of the major economic issues and lessons to be drawn from the recent economic development of the dynamic economies of East Asia, and of the distinctive features of major East Asian economies including Japan, Korea and China. Key requirements of the class is to attend classes, regularly participate in group discussions and handover homework/assignments

 

Course Contents  

Introduction to East Asian Economies, Characteristics of  East Asian Economies, Growth Accounting and Empirical Applications to East Asia, source of growth. Financial Integration in East Asia and lessons of the 1997 and 2007 financial crises, Japan and China: Sources of growth and current macroeconomic issues. Evolution of Trade and Economic Integration Arrangements in East Asia, Trade and Production Patterns in East Asia, Macro economy of selected countries.

 

Key Points and Main Areas of Difficulty of the Course  

The main focus of the course is to provide basic information about the East Asian Economies and highlight  the key issues in the evolution of trading relationships in East Asia, including the East Asian Economic Cooperation, as well as some of the key policy issues facing the East Asian economies. We will also discuss the increasing economic influence of China in the region. The difficulty of the course could be the vocabulary and economics diagrams and schedules.
