1.      With a view to carrying on the spirit put forward in “the Decision on Intensifying Education Reform and Advancing Quality-based Education in an All-round Way by the CPC Central Committee and the State Council” which claims that “school education shall be carried out in line with the guiding principle of health first with substantial work done to reinforce physical education”, “the Student Physique Health Standard (on trial)” (hereinafter referred to as the Standard) is hereby formulated to encourage students to participate in physical exercises and cultivate healthy habits of regular physical training to enhance their self-awareness of health protection and physical fitness.

2.      The Standard is applicable to all students of full-time primary schools, junior secondary schools, senior secondary schools, special or technical secondary schools, colleges and universities.

3.      The Standard carries out a comprehensive assessment of student’s physique health conditions in terms of physical shape, body function and physical competence etc. A hundred-mark system is applied.

4.      In the light of student’s physical growth and development pattern, the Standard classifies the objects of test into the following groups: the group of primary school student in grades one and two, the group of primary school student in grades three and four, the group of primary school student in grades five and six, groups of students of junior secondary school or higher grade in each grade, and the group of university (college) student.

5.      Test Items

1)      Test items for primary school students in graded one and two are sit-bending forward, height and weight measurement.

2)      Test items for primary school students in grades three and four are height and weight measurement, 50-meter sprint, and standing long jump.

3)      There are six test items for primary school students in grades five and six, among which height, weight and vital capacity measurement are compulsory. There are three selective items as follows: step test and 50m*8 running are alternative; 50m sprint and standing long jump are alternative; and sit-bending forward and gripping power test are alternative for boy students and sit-bending forward, gripping power test and sit-ups are alternative for girl students.

4)      There are six test items for groups of junior secondary school students and students in higher grades (including university group), among which height, weight and vital capacity are compulsory. Three selective items are as follows: 50m sprint and standing long jump are alternative; step test and 1000m race are alternative for boy students and step test and 800m race are alternative for girl students; and sit-bending forward and gripping power test are alternative for boy students and sit-bending forward, sit-ups and gripping power test are alternative for girl students.

6.      Test and Pointing Standard The selective items stipulated in the Standard are determined before tests by local education administrative departments on a random basis. In the light of different situations in urban and rural areas, step test shall be carried out in all schools in urban areas and can be replaced by a corresponding item in schools in rural areas.Test methods of physical shape, body function and physical competence in the Standard shall be conducted in accordance with “the Interpretation of the Student Physique Health Standard (on trial)”. For the specific pointing standard of each test item, refer to Attached List1 and Attached List2.

7.      Grade Evaluation and Registration. The Standard final mark is the sum of points of all test items and is used as the basis of grade evaluation. 86 points or above is graded as Excellence, 76-85 points as Good, 60-75 points as Pass and 59 points or below as Not Pass. The final mark will be evaluated once every school year and recorded in the Student Physique Health Standard Registration Card. For primary school students, the grade evaluation will be conducted once two years on the basis of group. For students in other grades, the grade evaluation is conducted once every school year. For graduate students, the grade evaluation is determined in accordance with the sum of the score of the graduation year and the average score of other school years (each accounts for 50%).

8.      The MOE is responsible for the explanation of the Standard.
