The 21st century is the century of biology. Genetic engineering has been the core of modern biologic techniques. Learning this course systematically will serve a lot for other courses’ learning such as biologic techniques, biologic pharmacy and so on. We hope it will help students to gasp basic theories and laboratory techniques of genetic engineering by learning this course.

This course is set up as a specialized elective course for students who major in pharmacy. There are 72 class hours in total, in which theories and experiments teaching accounts for 36 hours respectively. Multimedia lecture is the main teaching method, preview before class, review and doing exercises after class, self-study, and final examinations are required in this course. Basic teaching contents: introduction of gene engineering, enzymes used in molecular cloning, vectors used in molecular cloning, commonly used techniques in molecular cloning, process of gene engineering, DNA sequencing, preparation of gene library, mutagenesis, and applications of gene engineering.

Experiments accounts for 36 class hours. Basic contents: in vitro amplification of DNA by the polymerase chain reaction, preparation and identification of plasmid DNA , cleavage and ligation of plasmid DNA in vitro, preparation and transformation of competent E.coli using calcium chloride, identification and incubating of transformants, preparation, cleavage and identification of recombinant plasmids. Through experimental teaching, help students get familiar with or master the conventional experimental technique of genetic engineering, improve their ability to solve practical problems, and lay a good foundation for future work.
